Performance Indicators

Local authorities are required by law to report on a set of national performance indicators and standards set by Government. Such statutory indicators reflect the broad range of local services provided, and are intended to provide a rounded view of performance.

Locally selected or voluntary performance indicators are important as a means of monitoring local performance and the responsiveness of public bodies and their partners in meeting local objectives. They enable local authorities and other bodies to tailor their performance management framework to better suit local circumstances, and provide managers with better information.

This site provides you with a database of ‘ready made’ of indicators through which you can identify a set tailored to your own local requirements. We have also provided links other PIs used by local authorities, and links to a host of sites providing ideas for the development and use of performance indicators. If you would like to see further links from this site, please e-mail us on localpi-library@audit-commission.gov.uk.
